Bullycide: An Ageless Problem

"Kids will be kids." "It's a right of passage." Stop lying to me and stop lying to yourselves! If it's not that big of a deal, why are hundreds of kids taking their own lives at the peak of puberty? Schools, the workplace and social media are some places where bullying is making a popular trend. Wait, let me take that back. There is nothing popular about this because the violence and deaths are starting to spark attention. It's awful that blood has to be shed in order to acknowledge an ageless problem. As if the world doesn't have enough problems, bullycide is another problem/issue/epidemic that we humans have to analyze. Bullycide is the reaction to atempt suicide triggered by ruthless bullying from peers and associated depression, according to Joyce Bender . It surprises me that people who are so unhappy with their situations in life contrive clever ways to harass, dehumanize, and devalue another innocent human being just for a hobby. At the sa...

He Takes after his Uncle[s]

Image
Most people who know me know I'm a Jackson fan. Michael, Janet, Jermaine, Marlon...all of them have songs that have been added to my life's soundtrack. It was no surprise to me when I started hearing about Austin Brown. I just did a post on this talented musician in Stimulation Status Magazine  and I just can't believe the overall sound that comes out of this man. As he states in his interviews with AOL and Lopez Tonight, he combines elements from Stevie Wonder to the Four Tops to the Jackson 5ive and amps it up with his creativity and energy. Personally, "All I Need" is on my list of wedding songs. I could sit here and blog about how much of a powerful force music can be and is to many individuals, but as I sit here bouncing in between "All I Need" and "Menage a Trois," with people watching me nod my head at the library, I really just wanna dance. I can't wait for 85 to drop, but I have no choice. If there is one quality that every Ja...

Go, Urkel!

Image
While listening to the awesome Chris Marino this morning, my ears were tickled to find out that Jaleel White will be joining Dancing With The Stars. We all know that White has more to his resumé than his role as the awkward-but-lovable teen whiz Steve Urkel from Family Matters (Gosh I miss the 90's...moving on). He's starred in other roles, ( DreamGirls, GrownUps ), written and produced a web-series, and has done voice-over work ( Our Friend, Martin). I know that he's way past this and obviously taking on other ventures, but I know for sure that I wasn't the only one who thought of this moment. I'm convinced that he won't be performing this routine, but I'm just gonna have to wait and see. Until then, I'm gonna relive my chilldhood :0).

Brotherly Love & Truths

Image
I had a profound discussion with one of my older brothers about the ills in the game of life. My brother and I are nine years apart in age difference. He told me some things I needed to hear about people in the world. Though he is not the first one to tell me this, he had the biggest impact on me. Anyone with siblings knows how difficult the familial relationship can be at times. At the end of the day, however, they are there for you regardless. Some of the relationships I have experienced up to my quarter-life crisis stage I have had a lot of time to think about, especially when it comes out in my poetry. One of my biggest flaws I am coming to terms with is that I have trouble letting things go. Depending on who I am talking to and who I'm dealing with, it can be perceived as either no big deal or a major diss. There were some other people in my life that didn't know how to treat others. They behaved in a disrespectful manner, tried to stain my ambition with the...

...And Then You Wanna School Me?

Image
Photo courtesy of Impacting My Life . Either there is a late reaction going on because of the times or people are indescribably sick nowadays. Problems in school have been around since forever ago. Teachers and parents concern themselves with school violence, especially after the Columbine Tragedy of the late 90's, Virginia Tech a few years back, and the list of unfortunate events go on (sadly). But what happens when one teacher attacks another teacher on front of students? This unforseen event occured back in December at Poughkeepsie High School. While local newspapers  were covering the stories from all angles, tweets and updates shot across the nation. Other teachers were in shock, students were traumatized, some of them even had to stop the attack. The victim (Glozier) wanted to let her students know that she was a strong person and she was recovering. The teacher who did the stabbing (Ricketts) faces 25 years if convicted of...

Accidental Weight Loss

Image
My Acquaintance: Hey lady, you look different...did you lose weight? Me: I didn't mean to... I kid you not, this was the entire conversation I had not too long ago... Summer 2009 This was the size I was my last semester of college 2 years ago. I spent that summer living it up in NYC as an intern with Martha Stewart Living. When I wasn't working, I was wondering around Manhattan thinking, "Oh snap, I can't believe I'm here!" A good friend of mine had me walkin' about 100 blocks everyday. It resulted in me gaining my size 9/10 frame back. Winter 2011 (with my good friend, Mitzy) After finishing college and getting caught up real life, my weight snuck back up. I'm sort of a stocky chick, but there is no doubt about the fact that I'm a thick woman. Not a problem for me, just like to keep it in tone. Every person that I have come across in my path has doubts and concerns over their stomachs. I'm no different. Size 16 here.  ...

D's Thoughts (These Thoughts...)

Image
I know this commentary is probably late, and I'm probably sure I don't care. I'm still posting it. Photo courtesy of People . I took it kind of hard when rapper Heavy D suddenly passed away back in November. I know I wasn't the only one. The feeling of depression lingered in my soul for a mean minute because I kept thinking about how his optimistic music got me through the rough patches of preschool. As I ranted about how I was coerced into eating vegetables that I could neither spell or stand the taste of, my older brother would pop open a bag of Skittles for me and blast music in his mustang. My brother bounced back and forth between Michael Jackson and hip hop in his car but nothing made me more ecstatic than hearing Jackson and Heavy D merge forces with the single, "Jam." The video was just too fun for words. The positive energy and cameos from Michael Jordan, Wade Robson, and Kriss Kross had me screaming for days. Heavy D made a lot of sense t...
