Social Death Notice

Could someone please explain to me why a mother in Queens is grieving her 12-year-old daughter's suicide?

The New York Post reported that a troubled tween, Gabrielle Molina, was found in her bedroom hanging from a ceiling fan by a belt after 2pm on Wednesday (5/22). Her parents, brother, sister, and are devastated, her neighbors completely in shock because she was such a sweet, beautiful little girl. The girl's aunt, Irma, is left with memories of how her niece wanted to sing and dance.

Gabrielle has become yet another unfortunate fatality, due to the rise of bullying, both at school and online. Young people, teenagers,Tweens, and even younger have gotten themselves involved and obsessed with harassing their peers as making life more difficult than it already is. It's pretty sad to say, but the Golden Rule and love of neighbor seems to be waning daily, more and more.

Just the night before, I performed at open mic (in the valley) and the piece I felt compelled to give was what I simply call my anti-bullying piece. Since cyber bullying is an issue rising higher than cholesterol levels, I will share a snippet of my tell-it-like-it-is poelody:

"If you can not change the way you treat me & if you insist on believing this big ole' world revolves around only you, then by the time you get my message, here is what I will do...I will unsubscribe from your YouTube, block you off on Blogger, roll off your Tumblr, and go back to MySpace. Don't Gmail me your email or Skype me on AOL screaming Yahoo! so I can acknowledge your screen name. You're acting rowdy and making a fuss? You think I won't subtract you off my Google+? Can you hear how you're acting? Do you see how you're acting...?"

With each new tragedy that results from bullying, the more I find that it is not the victim with the problem. The issues lie with the tormentor(s).

An old sociology professor of mine used to tell any and everybody that if someone is talking about you, then you must have something that they want. I had trouble admitting this to myself not too long ago, but I was bullied when I was a child. And it was over the dumbest things. Shoes, my allowance, my parents house, my Urkel glasses, makin the honor roll, you name it. I've been there, done that, and still go through it. I took twenty plus years to accept that I just don't give a dog-on hogwash what people say. They are not paying my rent, car, school loans, utilities or groceries, and unless they gave me life, their opinions don't matter. Sadly, that is not the case in today's world.

Each generation is getting worse and worse over nonsense ranging from music to school, trends, fads, hair, and everything in between. For some unknown reason, I wish that little girl, family, or friends could hear my performance. Not to say that I had the power I save her, but maybe, another outlet could have been tapped instead of resorting to suicide.

I pray for this girl's family as well as her grieving friends and tormentors. Who could live with the thought of someone to take their own life like that?

Tragic shame.
