Empowerment Through Beauty Expo 2014 Review

Last month, one of my great friends and I had the pleasure of attending the Empowerment Through Beauty Expo 2014: A Celebration of Beauty in Trumbull CT.

Empowerment Through Beauty, Inc was founded by Tanisha Akinloye. As an owner of an upscale hair salon, she observed life changes in her clientele after clipping and styling their hair and listening to their life stories. Combining the positive life changes she has witnessed with her ten years of experience in the beauty industry, she was moved to spread her message of confidence and beauty (inner and outer) through her movement. Since the inception of the organization in 2010, ETB has served seven counties in Connecticut and hosted a variety of events. Once of those events, the ETB Expo 2014 was a great way for women all over CT to start the year off.

At the expo, vendors strategically placed left and right had a similar goal, to impact someone's life. After mingling with attendees, visiting old friends, and a small soul train of classic songs, the shindig was underway.

Trisha Mann Grant graced her way to the stage and spoke some words of encouragement to the attendees. Some of the messages she conveyed were fear and faith not being roommates within the soul and the importance of inner beauty. She is a beautiful woman herself and what I appreciated about her speech was that she was humble enough to acknowledge that outer beauty fades and most people don't know what they have until it's gone. Grant pleaded with other women to work on the inner person, heart, and spirit...and more importantly for sisters to stop hating on one another. I couldn't agree more with that sentiment.

How often do other women start cat fights over the same piece of clothing, purse, or eye shadow? As long as you know you look good and the other girl looks good, guess what? It's all good! Her husband, Tony Grant (Madea Gets a Job) serenaded the crowd a few times, along with Akinloye's brother.

After hearing the success stories of a teen who learned the tricks of mass media's attack on beauty and a woman's brave fight against her violent husband, you knew that this organization would be moving quickly to help others. After more take charge stories from R&B sensation Jazmine Sullivan, her mother Pam Sullivan, Dr. Tiana Von Johnson and other successful professionals, it was no doubt that women would be leaving more empowered and confident with their purpose in life.

Women were getting pampered left and right, enjoying dinner and had a fashion show to end the night with a blast. Reviews and articles of the event were published on luckymag.com, Midwest Black Hair Magazine, and modernsalon.com. There were even some photo opps showcasing ladies rocking natural hair on essence.com.
